Safety on campus is everyone’s responsibility and a top priority
By taking proactive steps, we can all contribute to keeping UMass Dartmouth a safe campus environment. Here are some safety tips to consider:
Always be aware of your surroundings
Avoid distractions from phones and headphones when walking through less populated areas of campus.
Travel in groups whenever possible
There is safety in numbers. Use well-lit paths, let your friends know your whereabouts, and take advantage of the Corsair Shuttle Service.
Familiarize yourself with campus resources
Make sure you know where Emergency Blue Light Phones (23 currently on campus with 26 more being installed over the next year) are located, the University Police emergency number 508-999-9191, the University Police website, the University Counseling Center, and the Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality. These UMassD resources are available to you and serve to keep you safe.
Report suspicious activity
If something doesn’t feel right, or a person looks out of place and is checking door handles in the residence halls or vehicles, please report it to the University Police immediately. Learn more at “If you see something, say something,” by the Department of Homeland Security.
Residents and guests of residents
Residents and guests of residents must abide by the sign-in process, produce IDs, and sign in when entering a residence hall according to University Policy. This procedure is in place for the safety of our resident community. Be sure to unprop exterior doors and be cautious of persons without appropriate card access following behind you. Report persons who run by and avoid the sign-in process.
Secure your belongings
Lock your residence hall doors even when stepping out briefly, and take your valuables, such as backpacks, computers, etc., with you when in a public space. Larceny is the crime of “opportunity,” so don’t give anyone that opportunity.
Be aware of scammers
Be aware and say, “Scram to the scam.” If it seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true! If you are suspicious of being targeted by a scam, please stop and report it to University Police immediately.
We're here for you
Together, by staying informed, being aware of your surroundings, and looking out for your friends and neighbors, we can keep our campus safe. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to come and visit the University Police. We are always here for you!
Sincerely,
Chief John D. Souza
