Project P.O.W.E.R.
Project P.O.W.E.R.: Powerful Women Engaging in Reflection
Mission and purpose
Project P.O.W.E.R. is a Frederick Douglass Unity House (FDUH) female empowerment and wellness initiative designed to address the needs of undergraduate women of color at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The program encourages participants to excel personally and professionally while providing them with valuable developmental and engagement opportunities. The initiative includes educational programs, relationship building, mental health support, and transformational experiences and activities to support the overall wellness and success of Women of Color.
Definition of "Women of Color"
We understand “women of color” inclusively, encompassing individuals who have experienced gender-based marginalization alongside racial and ethnic lines. This definition recognizes the diverse experiences and identities within the community, including trans-women, cis-women, non-binary individuals, and others. We also understand the terms “people of color” and “women of color” as both political, personal, and universal terms that bring together many people based on the common, but dissimilar experiences of racial marginalization within the United States and abroad. Importantly, we acknowledge the intersectionality of race, skin color, gender, nation, class, sexuality, and other social identities, understanding that experiences of marginalization are shaped by multiple factors.
Learning objectives
- Introduce participants to terms, definitions, and historical context that resonate with their experiences
- Encourage participants to explore personal challenges and traumas that affect their self-perception and relationship
- Examine the complexities of race, gender, colorism, and other systems of oppression
- Empower participants to take ownership of their actions and decisions, cultivating a sense of agency
- Equip participants with practical strategies for engaging in constructive and supportive conversations, fostering inclusivity, solidarity, and unconditional support within their network
Women of Color Retreat
Mission and purpose
The Women of Color Retreat is an annual retreat that takes place in the Spring semester. As a culmination of the annual activities of Project P.O.W.E.R., and a closing event, the retreat seeks to cultivate a nurturing and intentional space where women of color can explore their intersecting identities, critically examine the intricacies of power and oppression, and foster solidarity and healing. Our mission is to create a community where meaningful dialogue, support, and trust thrive amongst women of color, empowering them to build bonds and coalitions as agents of change and leaders on campus and beyond.
To participate and attend the Women of Color Retreat, a student will need to fulfill one of three criteria:
- prior engagement in the program and its activities
- fill out the application for admission, or
- Be nominated to participate by a faculty, staff or a peer. Once nominated, an application will be required.
