Project A.D.A.P.T.: Amplifying Dignity And Pride Together

Mission and purpose

Project A.D.A.P.T. is a Frederick Unity Douglass House (FDUH) male empowerment initiative designed to address the needs of undergraduate men of color at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The program encourages participants to excel personally and professionally while providing them with valuable developmental and engagement opportunities. The initiative includes educational programs, developmental mentoring opportunities, mental health support, and co-curricular experiences and activities to support the development, retention, academic and social success, and graduation of UMassD Men of Color.

Definition of "Men of color"

We understand “men of color” inclusively, encompassing individuals who have experienced gender-based marginalization alongside racial and ethnic marginalization. This definition recognizes the diverse experiences and identities within the community, including trans-men, cis-men, non-binary individuals, and others. We also understand the terms “people of color” and “men of color” as both political, personal, and universal terms that bring together many people based on the common, but dissimilar experiences of racial marginalization within the United States and abroad. Importantly, we acknowledge the intersectionality of race, skin color, gender, nation, class, sexuality, and other social identities, understanding that experiences of marginalization are shaped by multiple factors.

Learning objectives

  1. Introduce & expose participants to terms, definitions, historic and current events, and more, allowing students to accurately assess themselves and the world in which they live
  2. Reflect on challenges and trauma that lead to improprieties and unhealthy habits
  3. Explore the dynamics of racism, colorism, and other systems of oppression
  4. Examine their relationship with accountability and assess their own agency
  5. Employ strategies to engage in healthy and supportive intercultural dialogue
