SouthCoast Creative Economy

UMass Dartmouth won three of eleven system-wide awards from the President's Creative Economy Initiative competition this spring. Creative Economy awards strengthen the contributions of the arts' humanities and social sciences to the social and cultural fabric of the Commonwealth. 

Andrea Klimt's Community Empowerment through Photography, teams students from M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River with UMass Dartmouth students to document the City's diverse neighborhoods and cultures. Klimt, Professor of Sociology and Anthropoly, believes the lens can empower young people as they examine and interpet their surroundings. ($24,600)

Clyde Barrow, Professor of Public Policy and the Director of the Center for Policy Analysis will work with the City of Somerville to measure asset base of its creative industry in comparison to the City's other economic sections. His award Analysis of Creative industry in Somerville, Mass will assess the financial viability of the creative economy and help the City support the sector's growth. ($12,000)

Grant O'Rielly, Associate Professor of Physics and Kathy Miraglia, Associate Professor of Art Education will present The Music of the Spheres in conjunction with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra's performance of Gustav Hoist's "The Planets". The Orchestral performance, accompanied by high definition images from NASAs missions, is the linchpin of a series of activities featuring community outreach and engagement at the intersection of science and arts. Collaborating community groups include the Ocean Explorium the Astronomical Association of Southern New England. ($33,300)
