MTEL Preparation Courses (On-campus)

UMass Dartmouth offers two Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) preparation courses twice per year: Communications and Literacy Skills Test (test 01) and Foundations of Reading (test 190).

PRD 571 Communications and Literacy Skills (01)

The Communication and Literacy Skills test consists of two subtests: reading and writing. The reading subtest contains multiple-choice items and word meaning (vocabulary) items. The writing subtest contains four sections:

  • written summary
  • written composition
  • grammar and usage
  • written mechanics.

Areas covered include:

  • comprehension and analysis of readings
  • development of ideas in essay form on specific topics
  • outlining and summarizing
  • interpretation of tables and graphs
  • mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics

No textbooks are required. Handouts and booklet will be provided.

  • October, last two Saturdays of the month, 9am-1pm
  • March, first two Saturdays of the month, 9am–1pm

PRD 572 MTEL Foundations of Reading (Test 190)

The Foundations of Reading Workshop for MTEL 190 is meant to be a supplement for educators who are planning to take the assessment. It outlines the basic information covered on the test as well as key vocabulary and concepts. Participants will also practice responding to a sample open response question. Whole group and small group instruction will be used during this two day workshop.
