This workshop in creative writing will select and bring together a group of young people for a session of creative writing instruction by two of the most respected voices in Portuguese-American literature: Frank X. Gaspar and Carlo Matos. The place will be the Casa da Saudade, a public library in New Bedford dedicated to Portuguese-language materials celebrating their 49 th anniversary on that day. It is also the 46 th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution. In short, this creative writing workshop is designed to explore a variety of related themes: migration and diaspora, bilingual writing and literary culture, and their role in the continual (re)making of democratic civil society.
Students who wish to participate should fill out and submit this application form, along with either a four-page prose or poetry sample. Those accepted will each be given a set of materials from Portuguese-American/Lusodiasporic literatures to read in advance, along with a short writing assignment to be presented in the workshop. If submitting materials by email, or requesting further information, the address is clarkosh@umassd.edu. By regular mail, the address is: Prof. Christopher Larkosh, Department of Portuguese, UMass Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747.
