Wednesday, April 20, 2022 5pm - Center for Portuguese Studies Atrium, which is on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building, UMass Dartmouth
Join literary translators from UMassD and the surrounding community for an exciting bilingual reading!
These readers participated in a hands-on, collaborative 8-week workshop entitled "The Literary Translator’s Voice: A Generative Workshop," facilitated by Dr. Elizabeth Lowe, this semester’s Hélio and Amélia Pedroso / FLAD Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies. This special event will feature the translators reading their English translations alongside the original Portuguese, with music provided by local group Duo Mercurial (Yasmin Zandomenico and Grace Holleran). Refreshments will be provided!
READERS: Readers and translators include Viviane F. de Faria, Maggie Felisberto, Grace Holleran, Memory Holloway, Gina M. Reis, Joyce Silva, Vanusa Vera-Cruz Lima, and Dr. Lowe. They will read works from authors spanning the Luso-Afro-Brazilian diaspora: Conceição Evaristo, Jarid Arraes, João Melo, Mia Couto, Joana Gorjão Henriques, Lélia Gonzalez, and Antonio Lobo Antunes.
OPEN MIC: The evening will feature an open-mic portion for other translators working in Portuguese and English to read their work. Slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and interested participants should email gholleran@umassd.edu prior to the event. Anyone who wishes to read impromptu without signing up will be called on after those who have registered in advance.
LOCATION & PARKING: This event will take place in the Center for Portuguese Studies Atrium, which is on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building. Guests should use parking lots 1 & 2, which lead directly to the LARTS building.
