The UMASSD Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture | Tagus Press is pleased to announce the campus visit of renowned Angolan poet, João Melo on Monday, 27 March 2023 at 6 pm. Melo will discuss his life in Angola as well as his work, including his most recent publication Angola is Wherever I Plant My Field.
The event will be held in the Charlton College of Business Auditorium, room 149 on the campus of UMassD. Copies of Angola is Wherever I Plant My Field will be available for purchase.
João Melo, born in Luanda, is an author, journalist, and professor as well as the founder of the Angolan Writers’ Association. He was a member of the parliament (1992-2017) and a minister of Angola (2017-2019). He was awarded the 2009 Angola Arts and Culture National Prize in literature. Melo’s works have been published around the globe and translated into English, French, German, Arabic,
and Chinese.
Angola Is Wherever I Plant My Field was translated from the Portuguese by Luísa Venturini. In this collection of eighteen humorous absurdist stories set in in Luanda, Haifa, America, and North-Korea, Melo weaves together postmodernism, postcolonial realities and
Angolan history.

This event, which will be conducted entirely in Portuguese, is free and open to the public.
