Professor Lisa Owens presented her latest work “Revisiting Gender in Places of Public Accommodation” at the Northeastern Junior Scholarship Conference.
UMass Law Professor Lisa Lucile Owens recently participated in the Northeastern Junior Scholarship Conference in Boston, MA. Known for its emphasis on fostering early-career academic talent, Professor Owens presented her new work-in-progress, “Revisiting Gender in Places of Public Accommodation” at the conference. This work continues Professor Owens’ work at the axis of property law and constitutional law, as Professor Owens explores Civil Rights-era public accommodations law, equal protection, and evolving social norms.
The presentation, part of a panel on gender and public/private law, focused on the relationship between gender and public accommodations law in the U.S. The work also touched on issues of individual autonomy, gender identity, stigmatization, and discrimination, ultimately pointing to possible insights into the broader implications for rights frameworks, equality, and legal protections.
The conference brought together scholars and emerging academics from across the country. Organized by Northeastern Law Professor David Simon, many junior law professors presented work and were able to receive feedback from peers involved in similar research areas and learn from more senior scholars about the profession.
