MA State Representative Chris Markey acknowledges group's efforts to donate 300 lbs of food to hurricane victims
Massachusetts State Representative Chris Markey awarded UMass Law's Veteran's Law Association with a citation acknowledging the group's effort in organizing a food drive that received approximately 300 pounds of nonperishable food to be donated to residents impacted by recent hurricanes in Florida and North Carolina.
"Throughout my deployment, I received a tremendous amount of love and support from my family, friends, and my hometown VFW who sent us care packages," said Veteran's Law Association President Timothy Trocchio '25. "Receiving a care package in Afghanistan, and knowing that people were thinking about you, felt like Christmas morning.
"Watching the news over the past few months and seeing North Carolina and Florida residents in distress, I wanted to send a similar type of help to let them know we were thinking of them."
Half of the donated food items will be sent to the Student Veterans of America at Craven Community College in North Carolina, who will distribute the items to residents of Asheville, NC. Trocchio is in communication with the Florida American Legion to best coordinate the distribution to communities in Florida.
"Service is a key component of our law school community, and military service is very true to our mission," said UMass Law Assistant Dean of Students, Julie Cahill. "We are all grateful to all the veterans who are an important part of our community."
