Commonwealth Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Hong Liu has received the 2023 Leo M. Sullivan Teacher of the Year award from the UMass Dartmouth Faculty Federation.
Established in 1971, the "Teacher of the Year" award memorializes the late Leo M. Sullivan, founder of and former professor and chairperson of the Department of Psychology. It recognizes a UMass Dartmouth faculty member who has demonstrated a particular dedication to students through exceptional teaching and advising.
Liu, whose research focuses on cybersecurity and the Internet of Things, has been with UMass Dartmouth since 1990. Of her teaching experience she says, "Thirty-three years ago, I chose UMass Dartmouth to fulfil my dream of contributing to higher education because of the university's commitment to student success. UMass Dartmouth's shared governance by administration, faculty senate, and faculty union ensures quality teaching as central to our main mission. The students of UMass Dartmouth come from hard-working families and many of them are first-generation college students. They have taught me meaningful life lessons, and I have grown along with them to become a better teacher."
