The Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program Award will provide Seyed-Aghazadeh with laboratory support for research in the area of aerodynamics and Fluid-Structure Interactions in flexible structures.
Banafsheh Seyed-Aghazadeh, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering, is the recipient of the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (ONR YIP) Award. The ONR YIP seeks to identify and support academic scientists and engineers who are in their first or second full-time tenure-track or tenure-track-equivalent academic appointment, who have received their doctorate or equivalent degree in the past seven years, and who show exceptional promise for doing creative research.
According to their website, the objectives of this program are to attract outstanding faculty members of Institutions of Higher Education to the Department of the Navy's Science and Technology research program, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers. The award of $508,936.00 over three years will provide Seyed-Aghazadeh with laboratory support for research in the area of aerodynamics and Fluid-Structure Interactions in flexible structures.
“Flow over high aspect-ratio flexible wings, used in aircraft designs, can be complex and highly three-dimensional (3D). Such complex flow interacting with the flexible body of the wing can impose stability threads to the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft,” says Seyed-Aghazadeh. “The focus of this project is to create Fluid-Structure Interactions experimental-numerical campaigns to characterize the flow-induced instability and associated 3D flow physics of such flexible wings. The findings from this project will leverage our understanding of the aerodynamic performance of flexible wings that can be implemented towards the development of innovative and effective flow control strategies, which is detrimental to the aircraft performance and its structural reliability.”
The ONR YIP has been awarded only to 32 early-career faculties nationwide this year. In addition to receiving this award this year, she is a recent recipient of the NSF CAREER Award. “I am honored that my group’s research activities have received such recognition via such a prestigious award. This award will provide significant support to my group’s innovative basic research into fundamentals of Fluid-Structure Interactions problems with anticipated impact on the scientific research and naval aviation community,” she says.
