Curated collection on display at Gallery X, May 29-June 30
Two upcoming exhibits at Gallery X in New Bedford will feature the work of UMass Dartmouth alumni from the former Swain School of Design from May 29 through June 30.
“Friends for Life” features artwork from the collection of Arthur Lopes, a friend of former Swain students who gifted the art to Lopes many years ago. The collection has since been owned, cultivated and curated by Daniel Cooney ’81. The exhibition will include a re-creation of Lopes’s original apartment packed with paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and drawings.
“Arthur had a gift for bringing people together through his good nature and encouraging appreciation for the students and their art,” said Cooney. “I’ve done my best to care for and grow the collection which now includes close to 300 works. It is a real pleasure to finally have the opportunity to pay homage to Arthur, his memory, and the dozens of Swain trained artists as well as other artists I have come to know on my life's journey.”
An opening reception for “Friends for Life” will be held on Saturday, June 1, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Gallery X on 169 William Street in New Bedford. Friends, family, and fellow alumni who remember Arthur or have work in the collection will be especially welcome to attend Galley X to participate in this fun reunion and interesting trip down memory lane.
