UMass Law ranked among the nation’s top 41 law schools for privacy law according to the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The IAPP published its first-ever ranking of privacy education in U.S. law schools based on its national review of law school curricula. UMass Law appeared in Tier 2, along with Harvard, Boston College, Boston University, and 26 other law schools, based on its Information Privacy Law course, an online course offered each summer. The only higher-ranked schools (Tier 1, 11 schools) were schools offering a certification or formal concentration in privacy law.
UMass Law Associate Dean and Associate Professor Shaun Spencer teaches the school’s Information Privacy Law course. He lectures and publishes on privacy law in the contexts of government surveillance and consumer protection and he supervises student research on a range of privacy law topics. The IAPP conducted the national survey because of the increasing importance of privacy law for both private and public sector employment. As the report noted, “With demand for qualified privacy professionals surging, the IAPP is working to identify and pave pathways into the privacy workforce. In the U.S., lawyers continue to comprise the largest plurality of privacy professionals.”
