Events hosted by student groups highlight various engineering fields

Observed annually during the week of George Washington’s Birthday, National Engineers Week recognizes the contributions engineers make to society. A land surveyor before he became president, Washington is considered the nation’s first engineer.
The College of Engineering is participating in the observance of Engineers Week with three on-campus events that showcase different engineering fields.
On Wednesday, February 20, the UMass Dartmouth chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is conducting demonstrations of how designs fit together in real-world applications at the MacLean Campus Center tables from 12 noon–2:30 p.m.
A middle school event for local students in grades 5-8 is being hosted by the Society of Women Engineers on Thursday, February 21, from 1–4:30 p.m. in the Stoico/FIRSTFED Grand Reading Room of the Claire T. Carney Library. Students will watch the Disney movie “Big Hero 6” and learn how to design and test armor for Baymax, the film’s central character. The event is free, and snacks and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to swe@umassd.edu.
Engineers Without Borders is hosting a Bridge Competition for all majors on Friday, February 22, from 1–3 p.m. in the South Atrium, First Floor, of SENG. Students can pick up their materials anytime in Violette 108 and bring their finished bridge on the day of the competition.
