UMass Law Professor Dwight Duncan was selected as the 2019 recipient of the Honorable Joseph R. Nolan Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild of the Archdiocese of Boston. The award is given to a member of the legal profession who demonstrates excellence in the law, devotion to the Catholic faith, dedication to family, and unwavering compassion for all.
The award was presented by His Eminence, Seán P. Cardinal O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., and The Board of Directors of the Catholic Lawyers’ Guild of the Archdiocese of Boston at The Celebration of the Red Mass. Historically, the Red Mass tradition began in England during the Middle Ages when the entire bench and bar attended the Mass at the opening of the Court’s term. Since then, the Red Mass has been celebrated throughout the United States each fall before the U.S. Supreme Court’s term begins. The Red Mass is a special ceremony to ask for divine guidance in the proper representation of clients and in the proper administration of justice in the courts and in public office.
