UMass Law Professors Lori Albin and Rebecca Flanagan published an article in The Bar Examiner on Bar Success. The article, A Community for Learners: Building Bar Success at University of Massachusetts School of Law, discusses the elements that contributed to UMass Law graduates’ 92.6% first-time bar passage rate on the July 2018 Massachusetts bar exam.

UMass Law’s bar passage success flows from its talented student body as well as its Academic Skills Lab and multifaceted Bar Success program initiated in 2015. Albin and Flanagan break down the features of their programs that highlight the skills that are essential to student learning.

“At UMass Law, bar preparation begins at orientation. Matriculants are introduced to the importance of rule mastery, outlining, case briefing, and analytical methodology from the very beginning of their academic careers. The bar exam is introduced at orientation as a hurdle they can and will pass.”

The article also addresses the importance of access to student performance data, which gives law schools an in depth look at crucial feedback. Detailed information from all bar taker’s performances help support UMass Law’s ongoing and evolving bar success programming.
