UMass Dartmouth hosted its first ever #CorsairChallenge, a community crowdfunding campaign held primarily over social media. In honor of the founding year of its predecessor institutions, the campaign lasted 1,895 minutes and raised over $130,000 in support of the campus from more than 1,500 donors. Part of its success was due to a $30,000 match provided by the Alumni Association, which gave all gifts up to $50 the chance to qualify for bonus funds. The Athletics community secured over $25,000 from its supporters and the teams competed for leaderboard style for a share of extra dollars for their budgets. Everything was tracked in real time on the campaign website.
In addition to soliciting support from its community of alumni, parents, and friends, the #CorsairChallenge featured on-campus celebrations where students were educated on the impact philanthropy has on their experience and were encouraged to share social media postings featuring what they loved most about UMass Dartmouth.
