Understanding Seasonal Variations of In-Situ Thermal and Seismic Characteristics of Degrading Permafrost in the Arctic Based on Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing
Presenter: Xiaohang Ji
Understanding seasonal variations in the thermal and seismic properties of permafrost is essential for assessing its stability and the impacts of climate change on Arctic infrastructure. My research employs distributed fiber optic sensing, specifically Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), to monitor permafrost degradation and its interactions with freeze-thaw cycles and civil infrastructure. By integrating DAS, DTS, Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), soil sampling, laboratory testing, thermometer measurements, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), and meteorological data, this study establishes correlations between permafrost seismic properties and temperature, providing a scalable and continuous monitoring framework. These insights help improve permafrost modeling and inform infrastructure resilience strategies in Arctic regions. In this presentation, I will discuss my experience applying fiber optic sensing for permafrost monitoring, the integration of seismic and thermal data processing, and the broader implications of this work for geotechnical engineering, Arctic sustainability, and interdisciplinary collaboration in geotechnical monitoring.
