Expo provides platform for ocean stakeholders to engage with SMAST scientists on sustainable fisheries management
SMAST research will be on display at this week’s 17th Annual Commercial Marine Expo, which takes place March 15-16 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI. The Commercial Marine Expo is the largest trade show of its kind on the East Coast.
The 2-day event includes educational workshops and discussions on fishing, resiliency, career paths, and other opportunities. The Expo offers a unique opportunity for members of commercial marine industries and ocean stakeholders to learn about the innovative research projects SMAST scientists are conducting in the areas of fisheries in the local region, around the globe, and directly at UMass Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST), which is the largest marine science program in the UMass system.
It also serves as a platform for SMAST researchers to offer their own perspectives based on their research findings, showcase services, establish collaborative relationships, and educate expo-goers on fisheries management practices. SMAST scientists have helped sustain the fishing industry, allowing New Bedford to retain its position as the number one fishing port in the nation for more than a decade.
