John Quinn, Director of Public Interest Law Program and External Partnerships at the UMass School of Law - Dartmouth, is the July 2016 CARES recipient (Chancellor's Award Recognizing Excellence in Service). John was nominated by his colleague at the Law School for his interest and concern for the success of the students and his tireless pursuit of opportunities for them. John's nominator stressed that his personal interaction with the students was the main reason why he submitted a CARES nomination. "John is tuned in to the rhythm of the law student experience." He understands the challenges of law students and works hard to accommodate their schedules. One example is how John schedules events and speakers for the Public Interest Law Fellows on Saturdays because he knows that students work during the week.
John is also relentless in matching employment opportunities with students' professional interests. He is tied into the legal, business and political community around the Commonwealth and uses his contacts to help students find the right internship or job. John's individual attention to students resulted in retaining a student who was considering leaving UMassD. John met with the student and when the student expressed interest in fisheries work, John (who sits on a Fisheries Committee) agreed to do an independent study with the student.
According to his colleague, John's door is always open and you can often find students gathered there. The students have a comfort level with him and this enables John to address issues and that makes his services very valuable to students, the Law School, and the University.
