National Science Foundation TEACH! SouthCoast Celebration Recognizes Teacher Leadership

22 Teaching Fellows, Master Teaching Fellows Honored for Commitment to STEM, Leadership, & Innovative Five Year Program

UMass Dartmouth's Center for University, School and Community Partnerships (CUSP) hosted a National Science Foundation (NSF) Dinner Celebration, yesterday evening at UMass Dartmouth's Woodland Commons to recognize 13 Master Teaching Fellows for completing a rigorous, innovative teacher leadership program and 9 Teaching Fellows for earning their Master's Degree and being endorsed for initial licensure by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

22 teachers from New Bedford, Fall River, and Wareham public schools, Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School and Global Learning Charter Public School were chosen through a highly competitive application process based on their STEM content knowledge, evidence of leadership capacity, and willingness to commit to an innovative rigorous five year program.

The Teaching Fellow or Master Teaching Fellow cohort was funded by a $2.86 million grant from the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program awarded to CUSP in Fall 2011. CUSP partnered with UMass Dartmouth's Kaput Center, School for Marine Science and Technology, Department of STEM Education and Teacher Development, Math Department, Department of Medical Laboratory Science, School of Engineering, and College of Visual & Performing Arts to establish the teacher leadership program which is funded through the summer of 2017.

The Principal Investigator for the TEACH! SouthCoast grant is CUSP Executive Director Karen O'Connor. The Co-Principal Investigator is UMass Dartmouth Associate Provost Dr. Tesfay Meressi. The TEACH! SouthCoast Director is CUSP Associate Director Dr. Patricia Trina Crowley and the TEACH! SouthCoast Program Coordinator is Kym Welty of CUSP.
