Florida International University's Dr. Joyce Elam to discuss the rise in women-owned businesses, the pitfalls, and advice to succeed
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman and the University community will welcome Dean of Florida International University's University College Dr. Joyce Elam Thursday, October 23, 2014, at 4 p.m., at the Claire T. Carney Library Grand Reading Room, for a "Own It, Women!" workshop. Dr. Elam will discuss the rise in women-owned businesses, the pitfalls, and advice to succeed.
Dr. Joyce J. Elam is James L. Knight Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), Miami, Florida, and Dean of University College. She has assumed a prominent role in the study of women in leadership and is responsible for an annual research study that surveys women-led businesses in Florida. She is also the faculty leader for a women leadership development program called Women on the Move, which is offered twice a year through the FIU Center for Leadership and the College of Business Administration.
Dr. Elam previously was an associate professor at the University of Texas and an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Dr. Elam was a Marvin Bower Fellow at the Harvard Business School in 1987-88. She earned both her PhD in operations research (1977) and her BA in mathematics (1970) from the University of Texas.
