UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual & Performing Arts Music Department Performances for the Month of April
UMass Dartmouth's College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Music Department has the pleasure to present the following concerts this month:
Afternoon Concert Series
When: April 3, 2014, 12:30 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Recital Hall, Room 153
Who: Pianist Wayman Chin has performed widely throughout the United States and Asia. In the United States, his concerts have included performances at Princeton University, the Curtis Institute of Music, Jordan Hall in Boston, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and on the Old First Concert Series in San Francisco. As a committed teacher, Mr. Chin has been honored with the Longy School's George Seaman Award for Excellence in the Art of Teaching. He has taught at the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival, the Stamford International Music Festival in Great Britain, and at UMass Dartmouth.
Monday Night Dues Concert
When: April 16, 2014, 7:30 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Recital Hall, Room 153
Who: One of UMass Dartmouth's longest running jazz ensembles will perform works from Sergio Mendes, Lee Morgan, Gregory Porter, Spike Lee, Duke Ellington and varied other composers.
Afternoon Concert Series
When: April 17, 2014, 12:30 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Recital Hall, Room 153
Who: Rieko Tanaka has distinguished herself as a classical pianist and jazz musician. She can play anything, including blues, rock, and the American Songbook. Ms. Tanaka has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras including the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Suruga Philharmonic Orchestra, and KU Symphony.
Laptop Ensemble Concert
When: April 22, 2014, 7:30 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Room 104
Who: Directed by CVPA faculty member Jing Wang, the ensemble performs an interactive avant-garde electronic improvisation using custom-designed instruments integrated with Max/MSP patches.
Guitar Ensemble and Latin Jazz Vision Ensemble Concert
When: April 23, 2014, 8:00 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Recital Hall, Room 153
Who: Led by Director Jamie Eckert, the Guitar Ensemble, made up of students studying contemporary and traditional ensemble skills, will perform with the Latin Jazz Vision Ensemble, an ensemble which features an eclectic mix of compositions and arrangements directed by Chris Pourdrier.
Classical Voice Studio Recital
When: April 24, 2014, 8:00 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Recital Hall, Room 153
Who: Wonderful evening of student vocal performances from a repertoire of notable classical selections.
Wind Ensemble Concert
When: April 29, 2014, 7:30 p.m.
Where: UMass Dartmouth Main Auditorium
Who: Led by Director Tobias Monte, the Wind Ensemble performs traditional and contemporary works, as well as chamber works for woodwinds and brass.
Gamelan Concert
When: April 30, 2014, 7:30 p.m.
Where: CVPA Building, Room 104
Who: Gamelan is an ancient orchestra from Indonesia dating back many centuries. It includes tuned gongs, metallophones, a wooden marimba, 2-string violin, bamboo flute, zither, and male and female singing. The instruments are played to state a basic melody that is enhanced by recreating it in complex patterns of improvisation.
