Campaign Part of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Project
SouthCoast Serves, a UMass Dartmouth and Leduc Center for Civic Engagement collaborative that fosters service and volunteerism, has launched an Anti-Hunger Campaign as an addition to its Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service project. The MLK Day of Service is January 20, 2014. This year, SouthCoast Serves hopes to echo Dr. King's anti-poverty message by encouraging service and volunteerism around the issue of food security.
For those interested in participating in the campaign, SouthCoast Serves encourages the following actions:
Volunteer by "adopting a food project" by visiting www.volunteersouthcoast.org to search for opportunities to serve.
Attend a screening of the documentary "A Place at the Table", which details the state of food insecurity and hunger crisis in the United States.
Participate in an Art Exhibit and Auction that will be on display from January 20 to February 2, 2014, spending one week in New Bedford at First Pilgrim Church and the second week at Fall River City Hall. During this time there will be an opening and closing reception in each city, as well as, an online auction of the artwork to help participating food justice programs. Artists chosen to participate will receive a stipend and can also receive a portion of the amount their work is sold for. Artists who would like to participate in the exhibit should complete a registration form and submit it to Alcia Moretti of ArtWorks! via e-mail (aliciam@artworksforyou.org) or by regular mail (384 Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford, MA) by December 31st, 2013. Notification of acceptance will be announced January 6th.
UMass Dartmouth's SouthCoast Serves strives to meet the needs of communities by leveraging resources, expertise, and capacity to maximize impact.
