2013 2013: Multicultural Celebration to honor Martin Luther King's legacy
Multicultural Celebration to honor Martin Luther King's legacy

Performances will highlight diversity on campus and the SouthCoast

In a major change from past years, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is honoring the legacy of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., not with a breakfast and invited speakers, but with a Multicultural Celebration from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013.

tThe theme will be "United on Common Ground" and organizers will welcome a half-dozen performing acts reflecting the diversity of the UMass Dartmouth community and southeastern Massachusetts.

"Exploring and celebrating what makes us different reminds us of what we all share," said Chancellor Divina Grossman, discussing the reasons behind the change. "The UMass Dartmouth community knows that inclusion isn't a chore that needs to be done. This Multicultural Celebration shows that embracing diversity isn't just the right thing to do -- it's also a lot of fun."

List of performances (more acts being added daily):

Grupo Raízes
The traditional music ensemble from Fall River has toured North America, Europe and Brazil with their world-class renditions of traditional and folkloric Portuguese-language music.

El Caribe Steel Drum Band
Led by UMass Dartmouth Professor Jamie Eckert, El Caribe brings Caribbean steel drum music to venues across New England.

Fashion Show by the Asian Students Association
A popular new tradition on campus is the yearly Fashion Show put on by the Asian Students Association, featuring everything from avant-garde styles to traditional Japanese apparel.

Classical dance of south India
Fresh off the success of this year's Diwali celebration, the Indian Students Association will put on a show of south India's classical dance.
