The UMass Dartmouth Improvisation Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will appear in concert April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall (Room 153) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts Building, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA.
Led by saxophonist/composer Jorrit Dijkstra, the UMass Dartmouth Improvisation Ensemble is focusing on the music of guitarist Bill Frisell. One of the most influential guitar players of the last three decades, Frisell has been a prolific composer as well, blending influences of jazz with country and western music. His music has a distinctive American flavor, invoking images of the wide landscapes of the American West. His music also opens door to experimentation with improvisational forms, and textural surprises. This semester's ensemble features some of the most talented musicians currently enrolled in the UMass Dartmouth music program.
The UMass Dartmouth Jazz Ensemble features student musicians from The UMass Dartmouth Department of Music and is directed by Department Chair Douglas T. Owens. The concert program includes a variety of music from the Count Basie Orchestra, Benny Goodman, Don Menza, Pat Metheny and many others. This semester's ensemble celebrates the big band tradition through literature study, improvisation, collaboration and performance.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information contact the UMass Dartmouth Department of Music at 508.999.8568.
