New South Coast Rail Stations: Expanded access to UMass Dartmouth 

The long-awaited South Coast Rail has arrived, bringing new commuter rail service to the South Coast region, including stops in New Bedford and Fall River starting on March 24, 2025. This major infrastructure project connects the area directly to Boston via the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Commuter Rail. 

With these new stations, students, faculty, staff, and visitors now have more convenient and affordable ways to travel to and from UMass Dartmouth. 

Closest South Coast Rail stations to UMass Dartmouth 

UMass Dartmouth is centrally located between the New Bedford and Fall River stations, making both viable options for commuters: 

  • New Bedford Station (approximately 7 miles from campus) 
  • Fall River Station (approximately 12 miles from campus) 

For those coming from the Greater Boston area, the new South Coast Rail connection offers a faster, more efficient alternative to driving, reducing traffic congestion and increasing sustainability in the region. 

Transportation options to campus 

Getting from the New Bedford or Fall River stations to UMass Dartmouth is simple. 

Regional Transit Authority Buses – SRTA (Southeastern Regional Transit Authority) operates routes from the New Bedford and Fall River bus terminals, both of which are within walking distance of the new train stations.
