Matthew DaCosta: Holistic approach to healthcare
Matthew DaCosta ’15 is a psychology major in the pre-med program. Graduating with a 3.99 GPA, he is a member, and past president, of UMass Dartmouth’s chapter of Psi Chi, the psychology honor society.
Following graduation, the New Bedford resident plans to continue working as an EMT before applying to Physician Assistant programs.
Psychology major on pre-med track
My academic interests have evolved to favor a more holistic, interdisciplinary approach to healthcare. Through the psychology department's engaging mental health sequence and the university's pre-med track, I've received a consummate educational experience that will aid my future pursuits in the medical field.
Achieving an impressive 3.99 GPA
I credit my GPA of 3.99 to self-evaluation, discipline, and optimism. I adjusted my work ethic in different environments, remained committed to productive habits, and approached my studies and life with a positive outlook. Coupled with support from my loved ones, I was able to maintain this academic success.
Experience with Psi Chi
My involvement with UMass Dartmouth's Psi Chi Chapter has proven to be a fantastic experience. As the former president and current member of this Psychology honor society, I've been privileged to work alongside great students and faculty members. From planning our annual Psychology research conference last year to volunteering in the community, Psi Chi has made a profound impact on my growth here at UMass Dartmouth and beyond.
After graduation: becoming a Physician Assistant
Following graduation, I plan to continue working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the SouthCoast and Boston areas. As an aspiring Physician Assistant (PA), I hope to further my experience in patient care and gain acceptance into a PA program next year. Outside of academia, I plan to revisit my passion for music and travel as much as possible.
Learning to take the initiative
Truthfully, I've learned to always take initiative. UMass Dartmouth provides students with a wealth of opportunities. Take advantage of them early on. Never shy away from contacting people directly and getting involved. With this outlook, I was able to gain both research and clinical opportunities at our university, Northeastern University, Butler Hospital, and more.
