In the middle of the semester—drowning in course work, stress, and ramen noodles—it's easy to forget how important your education is. For inspiration, consider Samantha Bailey's story of seizing opportunities while she was a UMass Dartmouth student.
Samantha graduated in 2012 with a BA in Sociology with an option in Anthropology, as well as a minor in Religious Studies–and she earned magna cum laude and honors. She participated in independent study, study abroad, internships, and campus activities that made each semester a memorable experience.
Samantha's study abroad experience in Morocco, for example, solidified her dedication to social justice. She extended that commitment through an internship with The Washington Center, working with migrants and refugees in Washington, DC.
"Seeing the real-world value of my degree kept me motivated," she said. "Each experience provided valuable opportunities to apply my skills. The faculty in the Sociology Department also played a major role—I was fortunate to receive their guidance and close mentorship."
While at UMass Dartmouth, Samantha also worked as an RA and Admissions Ambassador and was active in the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.
She continued her education at Brandeis University, receiving her MA in Global Studies in 2013. Currently, she is the Corporate and Foundation Relations Department Coordinator at Brandeis, where she conducts research to find potential grant funding sources, creates grant proposals and reports, and manages donor portfolios. Much of the work Samantha does involves research and writing, so she appreciates the foundational skills she acquired as a student of sociology.
"Your time at UMass Dartmouth is what you make of it," Samantha said. "Get the most out of your education and take advantage of all the opportunities you're offered."
