Property Rights and Land Ownership Laws in 18th and 19th Century India under British Colonial Rule
Dr. Chaudhry will draw from his recently published book, South Asia, the British Empire, and the Rise of Classical Legal Thought, to
- describe the scandal-ridden early history of the British East India Company and its focus on "laws of administration" rather than the law of physical dominion, and
- the later shift to a an aggregation of physical property rights and the emergence of "the law" as a free-standing institutional fact.
