Topic: Optical Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Near Infrared
Abstract:
One of the applications often employed by radar is inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. ISAR imaging exploits the movement of the target under surveillance to create a synthetic aperture, to which the reflected signal is then processed within a coherent processing interval (CPI). The signal processed within the CPI can then be used to extract information such as down/cross-range position and reflectivity of the target.
These systems go through extensive calibration processes, which are conducted in controlled measurement ranges such as anechoic chambers before being employed in a real-world scenario. This comes at the cost of an excessive amount of resources being used, more specifically, financial costs and space allotted. One way to overcome this challenge is to take advantage of frequency/target scaling since Maxwell’s equations are invariant under dilation of transformation. The research being presented will explore the fidelity of this solution by utilizing a wideband near-infrared source and a coherent receiver along with micro-sized targets.
