An Evening of Choral and String Music
Witness a beautiful collaboration of instrumental and choral music, featuring works from the 18th century to today.
The UMassD String Ensemble, directed by Dr. EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, will showcase their improvisational work alongside a fiddle medley and a Suite by German composer Emil Sochting. Unlike a traditional string quartet, this ensemble consists of four violins, highlighting the instrument’s full range of timbres and colors.
The UMassD Chorale, directed by Dr. Allyn Phelps, will perform an African American spiritual, a piece inspired by Indian classical music, Brahms’ beloved How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place, and Wanting Memories, made popular by Sweet Honey in the Rock.
The Chorale and String Ensemble will join together for three selections: The Highwomen’s inspiring Crowded Table,Kurt Bestor’s poignant Prayer of the Children, and a medley of favorite tunes from the hit musical and blockbuster film Wicked.
Come experience the beauty of voices and strings intertwining in a program that celebrates tradition, innovation, and the power of music to bring people together.
