Department of Fisheries Oceanography "Benthic Assessments and Monitoring of Offshore Wind Developments in the northeast United States" Kyle Cassidy Marine Science Permitting Manager, SouthCoast Wind Wednesday, November 20, 2024 3pm-4pm SMAST E 101-102 and via Zoom Abstract: Development of offshore wind projects in the United States has progressed rapidly to meet ambitious state and federal renewable energy goals. The installation of offshore wind farms can change the benthic environment and establishing a baseline is essential in understanding the overall impacts of offshore wind development. Benthic surveys are utilized at various stages of a wind farm's development including the Site Assessment Process, Pre- and Post-Construction monitoring, environmental consultations, and to help inform federal, state and local permitting efforts. Benthic monitoring plans are tailored to individual projects as developers utilize different spaces in the wind lease areas and export cable routes are generally sited on a per project basis where power can be effectively delivered. Monitoring initiatives cover a broad range of environments and are designed to survey unique habitat types that exist within each lease area. While the overall impacts of offshore wind development are yet to be fully understood in the United States, developers, regulators and stakeholders work to improve monitoring approaches and standards to help evaluate changes on a regional scale.
