DFO/DEOS Seminar - Managing Climate Resilient Fisheries by Cate O' Keefe

Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 3:00pm to 4:00pm

SMAST E 101-103 and via Zoom Abstract: The New England Fishery Management Council plays a critical role in the development and implementation of conservation and management measures for our nation's marine fisheries in federal waters from Maine to Connecticut. The Council is facing unprecedented challenges associated with climate change and environmental drivers on finfish and shellfish stocks. The New England Council recognizes the need to integrate ecosystem approaches to fishery management, consider approaches to introduce additional flexibility into the management process, explore mechanisms that would allow industry members to diversify their permit portfolios in light of anticipated significant changes in abundance, distribution, and productivity of managed stocks, and educate stakeholders about how uncertainty and risk due to environmental variability will affect current and future fishery management decision making. This seminar will provide an overview of ongoing and planned Council activities to implement climate resilient fishery management strategies, highlighting regional and coastwide efforts.
