Hi. I'm Ron DiPippo, a retired Chancellor Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the former Associate Dean of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMD). I taught here from September 1967 until my retirement in June of 2004. Prior to that I worked as a junior engineer for the Grinnell Corporation in Providence, Rhode Island, and as a mechanical engineer at the United States Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, Rhode Island. While at UMD, I also was a Visiting Research Professor and Visiting Lecturer at Brown University in Providence. Since retiring, I have been a visiting lecturer and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as a visiting lecturer at the School for Renewable Energy Science at the University of Akureyri, Iceland, and most recently as a lecturer at the National Geothermal Academy at the University of Nevada Reno.

During and immediately following graduate school at Brown University, I was a researcher in the area of thermodynamic and transport properties of gases at high temperatures and pressures. For this work, I was chosen as a U.S. delegate to the Seventh International Conference on the Properties of Steam held in Tokyo in 1968. Later while at NUWC, my work turned to the thermodynamic analysis of compact propulsion systems for underwater applications and to fluid flow phenomena. Starting In 1975 I focused my professional and research interests in geothermal energy. Since then, I have:

  • Conducted research into the nature of two-phase flow of geothermal fluids.
  • Written and edited several books and contributed sections and chapters for handbooks dealing with the design and engineering of geothermal energy conversion systems.
  • Conducted workshops for various groups involved in operating and building geothermal power plants.
  • Advised several foreign governments on how best to develop their geothermal resources.
  • Taught undergraduate and graduate courses in geothermal power at UMD, MIT, and in Iceland.

This work has taken me to Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Iceland, and Mexico, plus the following geothermally active states: California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In 2015, the 4th edition of my book Geothermal Power Plants: Principles, Applications, Case Studies and Environmental Impact was published:

https://www.elsevier.com/books/geothermal-power-plants/dipippo/978-0-08-100879-9.

In 2016, I organized a collaborative effort involving 32 geothermal researchers that resulted in a new 854-page book Geothermal Power Generation, 1st. Ed.: Developments and Innovation: https://www.elsevier.com/books/geothermal-power-generation/dipippo/978-0-08-100337-4.

Also in 2016, the 3rd edition of my book Geothermal Power Plants was translated and published in Chinese. Most recently in 2019, working with two professors from Ukraine, I published a new 394-page book with Academic Press, Low-Temperature Energy Systems with Applications of Renewable Energy:

https://www.elsevier.com/books/low-temperature-energy-systems-with-applications-of-renewable-energy/redko/978-0-12-816249-1.

During my 37 years at UMD (and at two of its predecessor institutions, SMU and SMTI), I was the President of the Faculty Senate for four years, Director of Industry Relations for the College of Engineering for one year, Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department for a total of 14 years, and the Associate Dean for the College of Engineering for three years.

My teaching area was thermodynamics and related subjects, including power plant design and engineering, refrigeration and air conditioning, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and geothermal energy. In addition, I taught courses in Newtonian mechanics, computer programming and laboratories in thermodynamics. I was honored in 1989 to have been selected as the recipient of the AT&T Foundation Award for Excellence in the Instruction of Engineering Students among the schools in New England. The monetary award I received was used to endow the Prize for Excellence in Thermodynamics, which now bears my name, bestowed annually on a deserving junior mechanical engineering student. My greatest satisfaction in teaching comes from seeing the successes of many of my students who have risen to positions of prominence in industry, government and academe.
