The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at UMass Dartmouth is thrilled to announce an upcoming student exhibition that brings the latest in motion design and digital fabrication to the forefront. This exhibition will showcase the creative work of over twenty students from two Art + Design courses—Dynamic, Screen-Based Typography and Digital Fabrication. These courses highlight the interdisciplinary nature of art and design, fusing creativity with technology to create a wide variety of work.

Join us in celebrating the achievements of these talented students who are pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity. The exhibition is open free of charge and all are welcome to experience the future of design and fabrication. The reception is planned for Thursday, December 5, from 5–7 PM at the gallery on the 1st floor of the CVPA building at 285 Old Westport Road in Dartmouth, MA 02747. Light refreshments will be served. Visitor parking is available in lots 5, 14 and 18.

Both courses, grounded in emerging technologies, delve into creative coding, motion design, and advanced fabrication techniques, challenging students to think beyond traditional media. Students’ projects span multiple disciplines and demonstrate the versatility and impact of high-tech tools in the modern creative landscape.

Dynamic, Screen-Based Typography explores the foundations of motion design, where students learn to animate type and create engaging visuals for video, web, and social media platforms. Through rigorous client work, students have collaborated with notable on-campus organizations such as the Center for Women and Gender Studies, the Sustainability Office, Arnie’s Thrift Shop, and CVPA. Their projects go beyond academic exercises, reflecting professional-level execution and real-world impact.

Digital Fabrication introduces students to state-of-the-art tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers and more. Students apply these advanced techniques to address real-world needs, including creating space improvements for Arnie’s Thrift Shop through innovative digital fabrication. These projects underscore how digital fabrication is redefining what is possible in art and design, from concept to physical creation.

The exhibition features a range of work, including personal art and design projects alongside client-focused initiatives. Visitors can expect to see not only the students’ individual artistic expressions but also tangible results from their client collaborations, showcasing how UMass Dartmouth students use technology to bridge art, design, and functionality.

The gallery hours through December 10 are: Monday - Friday 10 AM–5 PM, Thursdays open until 7 PM, Saturday 12–4 PM, Sunday 11 AM–2 PM, and will be open through January 20 by appointment. Please contact Viera Levitt, Gallery Director, gallery@umassd.edu to set up a time to visit.
