UMass Dartmouth CVPA Campus Gallery is proud to present Adrift, an exhibition by New York City-based Korean artist Heeseop Yoon in the CVPA Campus Gallery from September 26 through November 12, 2023.
The opening reception for "Adrift" is planned for Tuesday, September 26, 5 to 7 pm at CVPA Campus Gallery at 285 Old Westport Road in Dartmouth, MA 02747 with an artist talk at 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Please use parking lot 5, 14 or 18 and walk to the CVPA building from there. The gallery is on the first floor.
The CVPA Campus Gallery is extending its gallery hours: Monday through Friday 10 am - 5 pm, Thursdays open until 7 pm. You can also visit this exhibition during our CVPA open house on Saturday, Oct 7th, 9 am - 2 pm and on the last day of the exhibition, Sunday, Nov 12th, 9 am - 2 pm.
This exhibition, created specifically for UMass Dartmouth, presents a large-scale site-specific installation along with still-life drawings inspired by liminal spaces, objects, and memories that are typically hidden or unseen. The unique explosion of stark black and white drawings embraces the gallery space. Visitors can enter, become a part of, and actively engage with the work, giving them a more active way to think, discover, and feel the art.
Heeseop Yoon uses an original process inspired by the photographs of various objects drawn in her studio with quarter inch black masking tape on sheets of mylar that she assembles as a puzzle and finishes during installation in the exhibition space. Her process is additive; she uses lines on top of other lines, creating complex, layered drawings on the floor, walls, and – for this installation – on pedestals.
Yoon notes that the objects she draws “are mostly hidden from our reality but still wander around us. Most of the objects in my drawings are abandoned/discarded, moved around from one place to the other until they find their worth or home again.” This exhibition was originally conceived for the University Art Gallery at Star Store Campus in New Bedford; captured objects include items from this historic building the University no longer occupies.
The CVPA Campus Gallery would like to thank SAPAR Contemporary Gallery + Incubator and Nina Levent for their generous support and collaboration on this project
