Statement
When most people think of hip hop or rap music, the songs that come to mind are those filled with profanity, drug use, and derogatory views of women. My work seeks to explore the idea of inspiring young women to redefine the content of rap music to focus on social justice. This style of rap/hip hop music is called socially conscious hip hop. Artists like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Lauryn Hill, and Macklemore are trying to change the focus of rap music to instill change in the world.
Using bright colors, imagery of the target audience, and digital animations, my design strives to encourage the concepts of confidence, community, and empowerment while inspiring adolescent girls to set goals to attain these qualities in themselves. The aim of FEM (Female Empowered Music) is to grow the self-esteem of young women through sparking a passion for music, introducing them to the technical skills in the music industry, and motivating them to use music as a tool for social change.
