Statement
This installation investigates my early childhood through the lens of the new me. Mark-making, stains, and layers left behind by trauma fill this environment. I embrace the residue of my life because it makes me who I am today; it is a form of acceptance that I want portrayed in my artwork. I am neither trying to glorify nor create shame around my traumatic experiences, but rather create empathy with others. Through my artwork I am looking for self-acceptance, closure, and a pathway forward.
My materials and process become metaphors – embodying the emotions and events that I have experienced. Bronze, plaster, wood– show the solid and unbreakable me that will survive no matter what I am exposed to. In contrast, twine, old shoes, paper, thin fabrics reveal the more fragile side of me that can fold at any given moment.
