About Andrew Murphy
Andrew Murphy is an illustrator from Upton, Massachusetts who works with pen and ink, watercolor, and occasionally digital media. He has an interest in the natural world, specifically trees, flowers, and all sorts of other plants. This fascination comes from his passion for hiking in local forests and woods, exploring places that are detached from the man-made world.
Statement
My project is divided into two sections. The first half is a series of illustrations that depict an astronaut journeying through familiar fields and forests. This series was an exploration of many themes, including feelings of being lost or isolated, or like you are an outsider in a place you should belong.
The second half of this project is a zine of plant and fungi drawings. The first series of illustrations led to an urge to focus on individual plants and study them in a deeper way. I decided what to draw based on my interest in specific shapes, colors, and patterns. In my zine, there may be plants local to the region of Massachusetts, but there is also a variety of nonlocal ones too. Together these projects are two sides of the same coin in that they both have a strong emphasis on the natural world in their own way.
