About Sara Simões

I was born in Coimbra, Portugal and immigrated to the United States with my family when I was three and a half years old. Growing up in a multicultural environment where art and culture were always present provided me with unique experiences that have shaped my areas of interest as an artist. I’ve always loved to draw, and by the time I attended the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, I learned that I could transform my passion into a career and acquired the skills necessary to achieve that. During my time at UMass Dartmouth, I have developed my unique voice as an illustrator and graphic designer, learning how to showcase my skills in my portfolio.

Statement

For this project, I created a concept art series based on the characters I have drawn navigating their magical, dark world. The project is centered on women and their relationships, exploring themes of strength, vulnerability, and the complexities of human connections. I aimed to create a world that is both enchanting and haunting, drawing inspiration from gothic architecture and celestial bodies.
