Statement
What would the world look like if humans were eradicated?
This is a question that I have asked myself and attempt to answer by creating this project. Global warming, nuclear catastrophe, rising waters all of these events feel like they're imminent and the progress that we have made seems minimal.
The themes are from the plethora of films, videogames and TV shows that contain a post apocalyptic theme or setting. Along with the takeover from plants and smaller insects there is film noir lighting which adds a cinematic drama. Each photo and miniature construction of the late 1970’s early 1980’s the human population is zero and the earth is slowly becoming a greener planet. The design and objects within the constructions depict a post societal collapse.
Most of the photographs are inspired by mid-century modern architecture, owing to its clean lines, natural materials and lack of ornamentation. This leads me to imagine an interior space with specific lighting choices, the positioning of windows and light fixtures. I aim to make an interesting contrast between the lights and shadows bringing the viewer further into the environment.
With cardboard, I make a basic structure. I then fill the space based upon where it is meant to be, forest, desert, suburbia. I decide where and how nature is going to overpower the space. What kind of event happened? Using water, fake plants, dirt, and other mixed media. I bring this world to life by creating texture and a battle between the living and the lived in.
