Art + Design: Painting
About Carol Long Jepson
I graduated from U Mass. Amherst with a B.S.in Health and Physical Education in 1974. I married right out of college and had three children with-in five years. During that time i got involved in photography. My first course in photography was at the Swain School of Design around the early 80’s. I worked in a bi-lingual school and I used photography as a means of communication with my students. I realize visual modes of communication have always been a major motivator in my creative practice.
I began painting when I retired from teaching. I served as the Health and Physical Education teacher in the Fall River school system from 1974-2015. I always wanted to go to art school. Prior to raising a family and working full time I had very little education in painting and drawing.
Statement
I feel a painting of a flower has as many colors as a self-portrait has in a face. To know and execute that is an art. I paint flowers because I love the many colors in a single petal and portraits because I see a story in every face. I look for the intensity of color, the changing values, and the form and texture in both subjects.
Painting for me is a communication of time and place at this stage of my life. It is both reflective of my experiences and full of visual curiosity of my world.
