About Veronica Ferreira

Veronica Ferreira is a twenty-five-year-old illustrator from Taunton, MA. She is graduating with her BFA with a concentration in Illustration from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Her creative influence is born from her lifelong interest in history, fantasy, nature, and mysticism. The technique in which she is most proficient focuses primarily on line-work and how it can evoke a mood and describe a form. Constantly studying the line work of artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Hans Holbein, Rockwell Kent and Albrecht Durer, Veronica's work makes continuous nods to different eras of the past. She strives to capture the nostalgia of a bygone era with a contemporary twist that is all her own. Though illustration is her main artistic practice, her time studying graphic design and printmaking has significantly influenced the nature of her illustrations.

Statement

This capstone project includes twelve 11x17 illustrated posters that visually advertise hypothetical concerts, shows and tours of living, active musical artists, and groups. In this project, I explore how to accurately embody the spirit, sound and aesthetic of the chosen musicians through interweaving methods of illustration, design and typography. My methods also include researching and taking inspiration from traditional printmaking aesthetics and poster designs from various, distinctive eras of the past. Through this method I am able to express my love for history and its impact on art and design. The illustration for Mastodon is inspired by a hybrid of art nouveau and science-fiction illustrations from the 1970s. The world of rock posters that dominated in the 1970s impacted the project, further influencing my designs for Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats and Electric Wizard. The piece The Raconteurs takes influence from advertisement posters of the late 20th century, particularly from Alphonse Mucha and Toulouse-Lautrec. Occult medieval imagery inspired works in the project such as Green Lung, The Sword and My Chemical Romance.

Both the sound and lyrical elements of music have always been a driving force in my artistic ability. I am not a musician myself, but as a fan, listener, and illustrator I believe music is narrative and can spark the mind with visuals through its storytelling. This series of work is not a sequential narrative, but each illustrated poster is an interpretation of the story the musician provides to me through their sound. Although the audience may not be familiar with all these musicians, the illustrations provide visual context to the viewer of what the music sounds like. My intent for this thesis is to create images that describes the sound, attitude, and content of the musician through my own visual and historical inspiration.
