Statement
My senior capstone project is split into two parts: World building and 3D visuals including a 3D modeled character. The first part of the project was to create the character and give her a fun personality and aesthetic. The process of creating her in ZBrush and texturing her in Substance Painter took roughly all last Fall’s semester (about 3 months). The second part was to create the assets to look like she designed them herself and populate the world with them. The world is her own little abode populated with “her designs”. This idea was sparked for my love for character design and world building: creating a land and concept that would be unique to the character and further the character’s depth.
This project took a lot of research, planning, preparation, and perseverance. Working remotely on this project has presented some challenges, and the lack of in-person critiques changed the dynamic of education that I am accustomed to. The online zoom sessions we transitioned to last year limited the amount of constructive criticism we can receive. That provided some addition struggles, but also benefitted me by allowing me to learn how to be more critical of my own work and push myself to improve my art skills and work independently. I believe my perseverance, hard work, and passion for my original concept to come to life are my most successful aspects of this project. I fell in love with my character and her world which melted away the hardships and turned them into pure joy as I progressed through this project. This project taught me even more that the hardships can be overcome and allow your art to stand out if you really invest yourself into what you are creating. I have learned a lot about how I work as an artist, and I feel confident moving forward in my career and doing what I do best.
