Program overview
UMass Dartmouth offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science. All graduates meet requirements for national certification.
Medical laboratory scientists analyze blood and other body fluids to evaluate health status, diagnose disease, and aid in the proper management and treatment of disease. The program focuses on the standard clinical laboratory disciplines of Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Immunology, and Blood Banking. Increasing emphasis is placed on laboratory instrumentation, computers, quality control and genetic/molecular diagnostics.
The UMass Dartmouth Medical Laboratory Science program is completed within the traditional academic calendar and the department arranges hospital affiliations.
Certification/Licensure
Students are eligible for national certification, but UMass Dartmouth has not determined eligibility for any other states or territories licensure. Students are notified of this at orientation and at the start of the MLS program, and are encouraged to research their home states and territories licensure requirements, if any.

Graduation/Attrition Rates
For students who begin the senior year, the graduation rates are:
CLS Class of 2022: 100% (with a 0% attrition rate)
CLS Class of 2023: 100% (with a 0% attrition rate)
CLS Class of 2024: 100% (with a 0% attrition rate)
Results from National Certification Examinations*
The certification examination for graduates from the Clinical Laboratory Science program is the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) examination offered by the Board of Certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology). The pass rate for graduates who have taken the exam within one year following graduation:
CLS Class of 2022: 95% Pass Rate (National pass rate was 69%)
CLS Class of 2023: 88% Pass Rate (National pass rate was 69%)
CLS Class of 2024: 93% Pass Rate (National pass rate was 69%)*
3-year Pass Rate Average: 92%

Employment Success Rates:
CLS Class of 2021: Nineteen (19) graduates had a job or continued education within one year of graduation with a placement rate of 100%.
CLS Class of 2022: Twenty-one (21) graduates had a job or continued with education within one year of graduation with a placement rate of 100%.
CLS Class of 2023: Twenty (20) graduates had a job or continued with education within one year of graduation with a placement rate of 100%.
