The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is highly successful at placing students into graduate school, averaging more than 4 placements per year into Ph.D. programs. This has included admission to MIT, Yale, Columbia, and Brown. Departmental alumni have worked at forensics positions in the Massachusetts Crime Lab, for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Graduates have gone on to hold many industrial jobs, including positions at Pfizer, Bristol-Meyer, Siemens and Waters-Millipore. Many of our former students have taken positions teaching chemistry at area high schools, including Fairhaven and New Bedford High. The department has been very successful at placing students in medical school. Recent placements include UMass Medical School, Tufts University School of Medicine, University of Michigan, Nova Southeastern School of Medicine, and Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
