Ph.D. Chemistry, 1988, Brown University
Postdoctoral Research (Biochemistry, drug development) 1988-1991, Brown University
Interests:
Focus areas: Chemistry of biologically active natural products, mechanisms of anticancer, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of flavonoids and triterpenoids from cranberry and other fruits; functional food factors and nutrition; isolation and structure elucidation of natural products; development of secondary metabolites in Vaccinium species.
The Neto research group is currently involved in active collaborations with biologists at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada; plant physiologists and pathologists at the University of Massachusetts Cranberry Experiment Station and Cornell University; scientists at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Microbiotix, Inc. and Bruker-Biospin; and other UMass-Dartmouth faculty including Dr. Maolin Guo (Biochemistry), Dr. Tracie Ferreira (Bioengineering) and Dr. Frank Scarano (Medical Laboratory Science).
In 2011, Dr. Neto and Dr. Guo received a grant from the UMass President's Office to establish the UMass Cranberry Health Research Center, a research collaborative dedicated to advancing the science behind the health benefits of cranberries. Dr. Neto serves as one of the CHRC Directors. Visit our website at: www.umassd.edu/chrc
