General Biology

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology: General Biology are in a versatile, well-rounded concentration.

General Biology is the concentration for all biology majors. They may subsequently choose a specialized concentration. The curriculum is designed to allow students with wide-ranging interests in Biology to receive diverse training as they take biology electives. This concentration is designed for students who wish to graduate with as broad of a scope of Biology training as possible. The flexibility built into the curriculum means students in the General Biology concentration can still focus on areas of interest, particularly if they discover their interest after taking several upper-level elective courses.

The Biology major and the General Biology concentration offer laboratory and field courses ranging from molecular biology and genetics courses to ecology and evolution. Opportunities through coursework provide direct experience with a wide range of organisms and study systems and employ relevant laboratory and field techniques to study those systems. Students in this concentration have the most flexibility in choosing their upper level biology electives, because the graduation requirements are more general than other options.

The General Biology concentration prepares students for a wide range of careers and students planning to attend Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Biology.

Research Opportunities: Like all specialized concentrations, you can conduct independent research projects with Faculty advisors.

Minor: The flexibility of the General Biology concentration allows students to pursue a minor to broaden their skills and knowledge.
